Order of Constantine Selects Jim Dora '58

Jim Dora, Sr. ‘58

James E. Dora, Sr. was recently honored by Sigma Chi Fraternity as Delta Delta’s most recent inductee into the Order of Constantine, Sigma Chi’s highest honor for service to our Fraternity. Jim received this recognition for his ongoing contributions and commitment to Delta Delta and the General International Fraternity.

Jim was initiated in October 1955 and for the next 60 years he has consistently contributed and been involved with major projects at Delta Delta and supported brothers of numerous chapters with his generosity and guidance.

Past Grand Consul Keith Krach ’79 remarked, “Jim, you have given so much to Sigma Chi and Delta Delta. I wouldn't know how to calculate the impact you have on all of us Sigs young and old. You have been an inspiration to me from the first time I met you and you continue to model the way on how to live our Sigma Chi values every day.”

A Lifetime of Contribution to Sigma Chi

Jim, throughout his career, has lent his expertise, time and financial resources to Delta Delta and the General Fraternity. As the owner and operator of a large number of Holiday Inns and other hotels, his knowledge of building construction, facility design, food service and property management have guided a number of projects at the Delta Delta chapter house.

When the chapter house kitchen was revamped 30 year ago, Jim led the project with his expertise and financial support. In 2004 Jim was the catalyst of the complete restoration and remodeling of the Delta Delta chapter house which was a $7.4 million undertaking. Upon the completion of the renovation phase, Jim has stayed involved in raising more funds to establish a long term maintenance fund.

Over the years Jim has remained engaged with the International Fraternity by attending Grand Chapter and BLTW as a Distinguished Alumnus. He also was a member of the Fraternity’s Strategic Planning Committee in 2003 – 2005 and has been a financial supporter of the Sigma Chi Foundation for several decades. Jim is a Significant Sig and a member of the Sigma Chi Hall of Fame.

First Ben Taylor Award Recipient

In 2015 Delta Delta honored Jim with the first Ben Taylor Award for his lifetime contributions to Delta Delta and Sigma Chi. It was a special night to see just how much his efforts had meant to the chapter and many alumni.

It would be hard to think of too many others who have made the long term commitment, had the sustained involvement, and given the ongoing support to his Fraternity and chapter the way Brother Dora has for over 60 years. He has truly exemplified the ideals of Sigma Chi throughout his extraordinary life.

Tom Leslie ’68, a member of the Order of Constantine, summed it up well, “Congratulations Jim! Delta Delta is sitting very tall among all the other chapters because of your efforts. Thanks for your devotion to our beloved chapter.”
