Sigs Team Up with Special Olympics Basketball Team
Four Sigs, Drew Greene ‘19, Jared Marcotte ‘18, Dexter Odle ‘17 and Quentin Douglass ‘18, joined a group of Special Olympic athletes in a unified basketball exhibition scrimmage held at halftime of the Purdue men’s game against Southern Indiana. Special Olympics unified basketball teams partner players without special needs with Special Olympic athletes.
Fans Cheer On Teams
At this exhibition game played in front of a crowd of 10,000 fans, two Sigs played with three Special Olympic athletes on each team. With Sigs J.T. Garnett ’17 and Phil Steele ’77 officiating, both teams worked the ball and made some great plays and shots. Special Olympian Sig Ryan Steele ’11 failed to connect on a couple of three point attempts as the crowd cheered for both teams until the final buzzer sounded.
Drew Greene ’19 who organized the Sigma Chi participants commented, “This was really fun. To be out playing on Keady Court and helping the Special Olympic players have a great experience is very rewarding. We were happy to help out.”
