Harbaugh Honored for Sigma Chi Contributions

Greg Harbaugh ‘78

"I can't tell you how much it meant to receive the Order of Constantine at good ol' 202 Littleton. It was special. Most importantly, to have guys come from so far away to be there was effort for which I don't feel worthy", remarked Greg following his Order of Constantine presentation.

"To all who came, to all who sent kind and generous words of support, and to each of you who has been a role model, a mentor, a friend - my deepest gratitude. You are all special human beings who hold my admiration. I look forward to our paths crossing again one day soon", concluded Greg.

Dinner Highlights Harbaugh’s Accomplishments

At the 26th Annual Brotherhood Dinner Greg Harbaugh ’78 was honored as Delta Delta’s ninth member of the Order of Constantine – Sigma Chi’s highest tribute to an alumni brother. Greg was also recognized in 1991 as a Significant Sig for his contributions to America’s space program.

Greg’s contributions to Sigma Chi as the President and CEO of the Sigma Chi Foundation made a tremendous impact on Sigma Chi’s ability to provide expanded and new undergraduate programming.

Under Brother Harbaugh’s direction Foundation scholarships increased ten-fold from $50,000/year to about $500,000/year; programs funded by the Foundation expanded from a limited BLTW and two weeks of Horizons, to five weeks of Horizons (fully funded for the next ten years), a reconstituted BLTW that nearly doubled in size, as well as the addition of programs to address alcohol and drug use/abuse, depression and suicide, hazing, and sexual misconduct/rape. The Foundation’s financial reserves increased six-fold, from $2.5M in the bank to almost $15M, thus positioning the Foundation and Fraternity for a sustainable future.

Brotherhood Dinner Remarks

Ashley Woods, the current CEO of the Sigma Chi Foundation commented at the dinner, "Greg, with his insight and hard work, built a first rate foundation. He also took the time, over the past 10 years, to expand my thinking on the possibilities of how the Foundation could contribute to the broader goals of our Fraternity."

In Greg’s remarks at his Order of Constantine presentation on April 12 at Delta Delta, he talked about how his early days at Delta Delta had instilled in him a desire to give back to Sigma Chi. He stated it had been a privilege to be a member of this chapter and serve as Consul, and he would be forever grateful. It had been the start of finding out who he was, and realizing it was important to not be afraid of seeking your own level of greatness in whatever career someone chose.

A large number of alumni turned out to celebrate Greg’s achieve at the Brotherhood Dinner. One of his pledge brothers, Mike Schunk ‘78, summed it up well when he wrote, "Greg thank you for being such an inspiration to all of us and congratulations on your years of service to Sigma Chi."
