Derby Days Olympics Raises $25,000

Raising money to help beat cancer is the goal of Derby Days held each year at Delta Delta, but so is having fun.  This year ten sororities took part to have fun and raise awareness of how Sigma Chi’s support of the Huntsman Institute contributes to ongoing cancer research.  Through the contributions of the active brothers and their families, alumni, and the sororities through the Coin Wars competition, $25,000 was raised.

Derby Days Remembers Nancy Clark

The event kicked off with a White Rose ceremony in remembrance of those family members and friends of all the Derby Day participants who had lost their lives to cancer.

Special recognition was given to Nancy Clark, Delta Delta’s long time cook/housemother who passed away in 2016.  At the time a group of brothers raised funds to celebrate Nancy’s commitment to Delta Delta.  They offered these donations to her family, but they declined and asked that the money be spent on the chapter.  So, in Nancy’s honor $1000 from this fund has been donated to the Huntsman Institute each year for the past eight years to support the chapter’s Derby Day’s fundraising efforts.

Fun Competition Spurs on Participants

The four-day event began on Tuesday with the Opening Ceremony followed by an Olympic style competition including a slip n slide, running with an egg held on a spoon, jousting and a 50-yard dash. On Wednesday there was Tug of War; Thursday, Dodgeball; and Friday, a concert and talent show.

Pi Beta Phi with team captains Drew Parker and Max Bratchie took top honors.  Followed by Zeta Tau Alpha, team captains, Clark Sweet and Jack Grote; and then Kappa Kappa Gamma, team captains, Zoraiz Saad and Kyle Bastian.

Other sororities taking part and their team captains were Alpha Chi Omega – Krue Nagel and Liam Fay; Delta Gamma – Riley DiMarco and Carter Matthes; Kappa Alpha Theta – Mark O’Donnel and Cameron Milroy; Chi Omega – Michael LaRocca and Joe Huntine; Phi Mu – Uzair Nazeer and Emerson Foote; Delta Zeta – Brad Bolles; Alpha Phi – Luke Hopkinson and Richard Obert.

We’d like to thank all the Sig families, alumni, and sororities who supported this year’s Derby Days event.
