Punching Back at Parkinson’s Disease

Jim Obergfell ’64 has found a unique way to ward off the progressive symptoms of Parkinson’s disease.  After being diagnosed with PD in 2020, Jim began attending boxing classes at Rock Steady Boxing near his home in South Orange County, California. For the past 5 ½ years he has worked out with the club’s trainer five days a week.  Jim remarks, “These classes have been a great help in fighting off some of the symptoms of PD, a progressive neurological disorder for which there is currently no cure.”

Living with Parkinson’s Disease

Rock Steady Boxing is an international, evidence-based fitness program specifically designed for people living with Parkinson’s disease. Through boxing-inspired exercises, strength training, balance work, stretching, mobility exercises, and functional movement, the program helps participants fight back against the progression of Parkinson’s while improving confidence, independence, and quality of life.

Since joining Rock Steady Boxing, Jim has not only learned boxing techniques from one of the gym’s owners, a former boxer, Marlon Ealy, but has also become part of a strong community of like-minded individuals — people determined to fight back against the effects of Parkinson’s.

Co-owner Donna Clervi recognized that individuals living with Parkinson’s often need far more than exercise alone. Many also require support groups, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, educational resources, financial assistance, scholarships, and most importantly, a caring community.  After four years of hard work, perseverance, and determination, the Donna Clervi Foundation opened the doors to a new 4,000-square-foot workout facility known as Rockhaus.

Supporting the Cause

Jim is recognized for supporting Rock Steady Boxing with his name on the ring.

Having benefited tremendously from this program, Jim generously donated to the new Center providing funding for a boxing ring and hanging bags so that all participants may benefit from these important training tools.

Jim’s Undergraduate Days at Purdue

Jim stated, “My main thing at Purdue is that I was on the freshman basketball team before freshmen were allowed to play on the varsity. It was not until 1972 when the NCAA permitted freshman to play on the varsity teams.  We practiced every day and had some scrimmages, but never games against any other university or team. Except before the varsity home games, we’d have a scrimmage as the prelim to the varsity game. After my freshman year at Purdue, I received a full scholarship to play basketball at Saint Edwards University in Austin, Texas.”

Jim continued, “So I made the decision to go to Texas, and after sitting out my first semester because of NCAA transfer rules, I was disappointed that I did not get substantial playing time my second semester, so back I went to Purdue to get my M.E. degree. I can’t say that I had any big accomplishments on campus, but I was honored to be a Sigma Chi and truly enjoyed all the brothers and the house. My senior year, my girlfriend and pin mate Kathy Krugel (Theta) was named the chapter’s Sweetheart of Sigma Chi.”

A 35-Year Career at Dow Chemical

Jim’s 35-year career in sales with The Dow Chemical Company commenced in the summer of 1965. During his tenure with Dow he lived in Minneapolis, Midland, MI., Detroit, Indianapolis, Pittsburgh and Los Angeles. He married Bernadette Czapski in 1968. (Deceased in 2013). They have three children, five grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. Jim currently resides in Coto de Caza, California.

Obie, glad to see you are still kicking. As we all get a bit more mature we find things are not quite as easy. Heres to you for your efforts. Keep on keeping on.

Len, it is so good to hear from you. It has been a long, long time. Your statement, ” as we mature, things aren’t quite as easy” is very true. Also, we all need to remember that we pledged to “Endeavor to Maintain the Spirit of Youth.”
I hope this finds you healthy and
spry.

Mac,

Thanks for the encouragement to keep up the good fight. It has not been easy, but I truly believe that the Boxing has given me some bonus time to be on Planet Earth. I will keep on keeping on and keep up the good fight. We all know who is the keeper of the Keys.
All the best to you!

Nick,

Thanks much for your kind comments. Some days I feel like I am 52 and other days, I feel like I’m 122. But it is what it is. I will keep fighting as long as I can. Your prayers are appreciated. You and your brothers in the class of 1963 were good to me and still respected. You guys set the trend.

Phil,

Good morning. Great articles, and I wanted to respond with some information which may, or may not, be familiar to you.

David Cline, a Columbus native, was in the Class of 1975 and for which I was Rush Chairman. Our parents were friends and contemporaries, and we knew each other from boyhood. He was a very good guy, never flashy or particularly prominent. Dave also suffered with Parkinson’s and benefited greatly from a boxing program based in Indianapolis.

Hi Harold this is Jim. I do not know you but I feel like I do. Because I have seen your name in a lot of the Delta Delta Data publications. David Cline that you mention in your comments attended a boxing program in indianapolis. If he had PD in 2006 or after, it was more than likely Rock Steady Boxing. RSB started in 2006 in Indy and still has its headquarters on the Northside. It has grown worldwide and now has over 900 franchises.

Great to hear you are doing well. Keep up the exercise program and stay young! I walk for 1.5 hrs each day in Georgia. That and good friends keep me healthy.

Hello Lynn. It is great to hear from you. It sounds like you are doing well. Walking 1.5 hours each day is a great accomplishment for you. I used to walk quite a bit myself, but my knees will no longer allow it. As we grow older, staying healthy is a chore. Keep up the good work.

Obie, ya’ look darn good in that photo. You were a funny guy back when we could hear! But I bet that same sense of humor is still there. Our good friend here with Parkinson’s just plows along despite the problems. She has a great attitude and I’m sure you do too. PS nice to see some comments from other lads of years ago!! Weigs

“Weigs” your comment about nice to see some comments from other lads of years ago is a good one. I am ever grateful for everyone’s comments. For sure, it brings back many pleasant memories.

I know that this horrible disease called Parkinson’s is not going to go away. Exercising is one of the best things to help ward off some of the symptoms. It sounds like your friend that has PD is tolerant and managing it well.

I have seen your photo a few times in the Delta Delta Data. You certainly look like you have Maintained the Spirit of Youth.

Hey there “Shelby” As I recall we gave you that moniker. I hope that all is well with you and your family. Can I assume that you still reside somewhere in the Indianapolis area? My light bulb is brightening with each day that I receive these comments from Sigma Chi brothers of the past. I do not get back to Indy as much as I used to as most of my family has passed away except for one sister. I have been back three or four times in the past five years and bring along my oldest grandson Scott(26) to watch the Boilers play at Mackey. Best regards!

I’ve been spending time with my Pledge Brother, John Pomeroy, who’s also batting his way with Parkinson’s. We’re meeting for lunch tomorrow at our favorite restaurant, and I’ll share your story with him if he hasn’t seen it. Keep up the good work, and “Amen!” to your embrace of our commitment to Endeavor to Maintain the Spirit of Youth.

Thanks for reaching out. It is always good to hear from people of our era at 202 Littleton. Your 1963 pledge set the standard for the Delta Delta Chapter. By reading some of the chapter news. I understand you live somewhere here in Southern California, correct? I am aware that Pomeroy has PD. Please give him my regards.
