Etiquette Dinner Makes Good Impression

Sigma Chi Etiquette Dinner

For several years it has been a goal of Harold Force ’73 to host a dinner for the undergraduates that would teach the finer points of etiquette when dining or being hosted at a formal event. Harold’s intent was to prepare our younger brothers to make a favorable impression when participating in job interviews; attending business dinners; or other events where proper manners would be expected.

Etiquette Dinner a Formal Affair

Harold and his wife, Debbie, hosted the first undergraduate etiquette dinner on September 24 at the John Purdue Room at Purdue’s Marriott Hall.  Working with the Marriott Hall staff, Harold made sure all the details were covered. Attending this formal event were 18 Sigs from the Junior class and their dates.  In addition to Harold and Debbie Force, alumni present were Meg and Nate Gustas ’05, Tara and Bob Burlas ’86, Nancy and Bart Burrell ’81, and House Corp President Jeff McKean ’86.

Preparing Our Brothers

The evening began with a social time prior to the attendees being seated. Harold welcomed and thanked everyone for attending and then introduced Anthony Cawdron who is the Estate Manager and Event Coordinator for Westwood, the Purdue President’s home; and adjunct HTM faculty. Anthony then shared his extensive knowledge on business and dinner etiquette.  A four-course meal coordinated by Caitlin Sullivan, HTM Catering Coordinator, was served by the Marriott Hall student staff.  To see what was presented go to Anthony Cawdron’s Etiquette Rules.

One of the undergraduates, Preston Bunch ’28, remarked, “The program on etiquette was extremely interesting and useful. All the brothers and their dates really enjoyed the entire evening.  All of us would like to thank Harold for arranging and hosting this dinner for the junior class.”

Phil, this is great, and thanks, Harold. It would be fabulous if it could be done every year.
